SHILLONG:

Shillong’s Congress parliamentarian Vincent Pala said that United Democratic Party (UDP) adviser Bindo Lanong knows that an enquiry is needed into the alleged food scam involving the Social Welfare Department.

In a recent alleged scam that surfaced concerning the Social Welfare Department, Assam Police found that rice, lifted from Food Corporation of India (FCI) Shillong Division, was repacked by Maruti Quality Products Pvt Ltd (MQPPL) into the East Sunrise brand and supplied to Assam Rifles.

The East Sunrise brand is a part of Continental Milkose, a private contractor of the Social Welfare Department.
The Social Welfare Department is currently headed by UDP Minister Kyrmen Shylla.

With regards to the alleged scam, Pala said that things needed clarity and an inquiry was the need of the hour to investigate the alleged corrupt practices within the Social Welfare Department.

“Bindo (Lanong) is a lawyer, he knows well. But all I know is that there is a case in Assam and things should be clear because it is the property of the people,” Pala said speaking to The North East Today in an exclusive interview.

Pala also expressed his discontentment on the fact despite an FIR being filed, there was no enquiry so far.

The MP highlighted that if an enquiry could be ordered on allegations against MeECL, there is no reason why the UDP should not support an enquiry into the current alleged scam of the Department.

As for the allegations on the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), Pala said that the Social Welfare Department needs to look into how schemes are utilised during lockdown and with schools closed, how mid-day meals are utilised.
