Meghalaya coalmine tragedy: Body of one trapped miner retrieved; search for four others continues

Speaking to The Northeast Today (TNT), an official engaged in the rescue mission informed, "The body of one labourer has been retrieved today. We are waiting for the relatives to identify and claim the body."

The rescue team, on Wednesday, retrieved the body of one of the five labourers, who was trapped in the coal mine at Sutnga, East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. 

Speaking to The Northeast Today (TNT), an official engaged in the rescue mission informed, "The body of one labourer has been retrieved today. We are waiting for the relatives to identify and claim the body."

Meanwhile, the NDRF and the Indian Navy divers are involved in the rescue operation to retrieve the other miners.

On Tuesday, Navy divers carried out mapping of the main shaft using ROV SONAR and detected two suspicious objects. 

Five miners, four from Assam and one from Tripura, were trapped inside a coal mine in Sutnga on May 30, 2021.

The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) had earlier registered a case against the incident and sought a detailed report on it from the government.
