SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, on Monday, called on Union Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar and submitted a proposal to set up Employees' State Insurance (ESI) medical facilities in the state.

Sangma urged the union minister to consider the proposal of setting up such a facility, given the current medical emergency amid the COVID pandemic.

It may be mentioned that the lack of dedicated ESI hospitals make people incur a financial burden for medical expenses, as a majority of the people still rely on medical insurance coverage offered by various banks and other companies.

The Employees' State Insurance Scheme provides full medical care in the form of medical attendance, treatment, drugs and injections, specialist consultation and hospitalization to insured persons.

Under the ESI Act, any employee whose gross salary is up to Rs 21,000 can avail ESI facility with the help of the employer.
