Meghalaya: 23-year-old drowns at Umtrew river

A 23-year-old girl was found dead after she drowned at Umtrew river in Byrnihat, Ri Bhoi District of Meghalaya.

The deceased person was identified as Phibadawanrisa Lyngdoh Mawlong, a resident of Mission Mairang.

Mawlong was also one of the Lab Technician staff working at the Entry Check Point cum Facilitation Centre at Umling.

According to sources, the incident took place in the afternoon when Phibadawanrisa, along with her four friends went to the river site of Umtrew for a picnic, but unfortunately she slipped into the river while taking photos.

Sources informed that two girls slipped and fell into the river. While Mawlong drowned, the other, identified as 22-yr-old Sandra Khongrangjem from Mawlai Nongkwar, was rescued.
