NONGPOH:

In the wake of the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, a mega vaccination drive will be launched across Ri Bhoi district in December.

Informing the same, the deputy commissioner of Ri Bhoi district, RM Kurbah, on November 30, has urged unvaccinated people of the district to take advantage of this opportunity and get their vaccine shots.

Kurbah informed that following the state government’s directive to conduct special vaccination campaign across the districts of the state, special health teams will be deployed in the polling stations of all blocks across Ri Bhoi.

While the dates of the drive at all polling stations under Umling Block are December 6 and 7, those in Jirang Block are December 9 and 10. For Umsning Block, people will be able to take their jabs on December 13 and 14 and for Bhoirymbong Block, the dates have been fixed as December 16 and 17, she said.

Sharing data about the vaccination percentage achieved in the district, Kurbah informed that till date 56 per cent people have been vaccinated with the first dose and 36 per cent people have received their second dose, in the district.

She further added that in the current year, 112 Covid-related deaths were reported from the district as opposed to 10 in 2020. Of the total 122 deaths, 109 were unvaccinated, 11 were incompletely vaccinated, and two were fully vaccinated, she informed. She added that 79 deaths among the total were with co-morbidity and the rest, without it.

This implies that the variant is stronger in the second wave than in the first and as per the death analysis, majority of the deaths were due to delay in seeking medical help, she said.
