Meghalaya: MeECL commissions new power transformers at Khliehriat

It is indicated that with the successful commissioning of the transformers, a stable power supply will be achieved in Jaintia Hills.

The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (​MeECL) has commissioned two 25 MVA capacity Power transformers at Khliehriat Grid Substation, which will ensure power stability in the Jaintia Hills region. 

According to the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of MeECL, Arunkumar Kembhavi, the Khliehriat Grid Substation is one of the major grid substations in the State and two new transformers were installed with a capacity of 25 MVA each, taking the overall capacity to 50 MVA. 

It is indicated that with the successful commissioning of the transformers, a stable power supply will be achieved in the entire East and West Jaintia Hills. 

"A long-drawn commissioning plan was adopted recently to improve the overall protection systems and enhance the earthing facilities as far as practicable, to revamp the old Sub-station at Khliehriat. Efforts have been made to re-use existing equipment and to bring in a measure of modernity in the operation," Kembhavi said. 

It may be mentioned that there are 16 numbers of 33/11 KV s/s which shall be covered under Khliehriat Grid Substation to cater in case of maintenance of 132 KV Mustem Sub-station. 

"This will also be a vital source of extra high-tension connectivity which will contribute immensely during the evacuation of hydropower generation of MePGCL and NEEPCO," Kembhavi added. 

According to the CMD, Jaintia Hills is known for its high Industrial growth which is a driver of the economy of the area as well as the state as a whole. 

"There is a continuous growth of power demand which can be catered with the enhanced capacity of the Grid Substation at Khliehriat. The Khliehriat Grid Sub-station is therefore of vital importance in the despatch of load in the state and the North Eastern Region as a whole," he said.
