SHILLONG:

Cabinet Minister and MLA of Mawthadraishan, Brolding Nongsiej, has informed that the inauguration of the newly-created Mairang district will not take place on August 15 due to the current COVID-19 situation.

Speaking about bringing the constituencies of Mairang and Mawthadraishan under the Mairang district, as declared by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Nongsiej said, “To inaugurate a district and to have only a few attendees does not bring much joy. We want the people of the two constituencies to welcome the new district with a lot of fervour."

He further added that Pyndenumiong, the designated headquarter of the district, is currently under containment, hence, the delay.

Nongsiej informed that because of the pandemic the inauguration ceremony will not happen in August. “It will not be feasible to inaugurate the district in August; maybe we will schedule the event for September or October. But we still have to monitor the Covid-19 situation. We hope that the public will be patient,” he said.
