NONGPOH:

The Khasi Student's Union (KSU), Ri Bhoi District on Wednesday voiced its protest against the decision of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to implement smart meter and Smart Billing system in the district.

The union also condemned the protocol violation by MeECL and UGO Company for conducting training on Smart Meter and smart Billing System in Umiam on Wednesday.

The KSU members rushed to the training centre and forcibly stopped the training session, which was reportedly attended by the representative of UGO Company.

Led by its president (North Khasi Hills unit) Ferdynald Kharkamni, the KSU met the Assistant Executive Engineer of MeECL at Nongpoh Division to seek information about the purpose of implementing Smart meter and smart billing system at Ri Bhoi.

The union also met the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi R.M Kurbah to verbally lodge a complaint against the MeECL for conducting training at Umiam, which is strictly prohibited during this pandemic.

The Deputy Commissioner has assured of action as per the relevant section of law, said Kharkamni, adding that they were asked to officially lodged a complaint in writing so that action can be  taken accordingly.

"The KSU will not welcome the implementation of smart meter and smart billing system in Ri Bhoi District," he said.

Meanwhile, the KSU has urged the government and MeECL to set up 132 KV Power Station at Nongpoh, so that the local people of Ri Bhoi, especially Nongpoh, being the head quarter of the District, would not face any acute shortage of power supply.
