SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday informed that police personnel who abandoned their weapons inside a vehicle that was later seized by miscreants during violent protests on August 15, have been suspended.

“The officials and police who were involved and deserted the weapons are under suspension and we are putting up an inquiry against them," Sangma told media persons.

Unidentified youths pelted stones and vandalised a black police SUV at Mawlai Mawtawar on August 15, forcing police personnel to flee the area.

The miscreants then seized the vehicle, along with the armour and weapons (Insas and AK) present inside, and drove around the city brandishing the weapons, before setting the vehicle ablaze in Jaïaw.

The CM reminded that the police must treat their arms and weapons as part of their body, and “never, ever let go” of them. He added, “What happened yesterday was unacceptable. Firm action will be taken against the policemen as well the miscreants who seized the weapons. Those people who have the weapons should immediately give them back.”

Sangma also informed that of the four police personnel present in the vehicle, three escaped without their weapons. Meanwhile, the whereabouts of the weapons are still unknown.
