International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed in Shillong

Attended by Social Welfare Minister, Kyrmen Shylla, and other officials of the state, the summit stressed on the need to empower the people who fall under Persons With Disabilities (PWD) categories and also enlighten them on various government initiatives and schemes taken for their betterment.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities Summit was observed here in the city on December 3 under the theme, “Leadership and Participation of Persons with Disabilities Toward an Inclusive, Accessible and Sustainable post-COVID-19 World”.

Attended by Social Welfare Minister, Kyrmen Shylla, and other officials of the state, the summit stressed on the need to empower the people who fall under Persons With Disabilities (PWD) categories and also enlighten them on various government initiatives and schemes taken for their betterment.

Speaking at the occasion, Shylla requested PWDs to obtain a Unique Identification Identity Card (UDID) and to renew disability certificate to UDID to ensure that PWDs can avail all entitlements on the production of the document.

He also expressed his gratitude to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for sponsoring around 200 aids and assistive devices to help PWDs in the state.

"The whole world has now woken up to the reality of their needs and problems and governments across the world are taking steps to make them part of the Community. So, we must strive towards this end, to create a society which gives equal opportunity to empower PWDs,” said Shylla.

Shylla informed that the State Government in association with the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities, Chennai, has established the Composite Regional Centre (CRC) in Shillong, and has also allocated 50 acres of land for Disability Sports at Umsawli.

Principal Secretary of the Labour Department, GHP Raju, who was the other speaker at the summit, maintained that doctors should coordinate with the Social Welfare Department and facilitate obtaining the documents for the PWDs.

He informed that the PWDs should get three important documents namely the Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar number and a mobile number for availing the government benefits meant for them.
