SHILLONG:

Social activist Michael Syiem on October 26 said that the proposed Khasi Hills Autonomous District Khasi Inheritance of Property Bill, 2021 should have been enacted by the state government so that the law could cover the entire state.

“If the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) passes the law, it will be restricted only to Khasi Hills, but the Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills also have the same issue. So, we feel, the state government is more competent to legislate on the subject,” Syiem told the press.

Syiem’s reaction comes a day after the Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) proposed the Bill, which seeks to give an equitable share of ancestral property to the siblings, both males and females.

Speaking to the press, Syiem, who has been very vocal about the equitable distribution of property and ancestral wealth amongst the siblings, stressed on launching awareness campaigns so that people can debate the pros and cons of the proposed legislation.

He also observed that the state government should either legislate or amend the Meghalaya Succession to Self Acquired Property (Khasi and Jaintia Special Provision) Act 1984 to include the provision of ancestral property.

According to Syiem, the state has not been making any progress economically since the economic power rests with the youngest daughter while other siblings are not empowered.
