HNLC cadre surrenders before BSF Meghalaya frontier

A member of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Junel Tongper, surrendered before the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier at Border Outpost Umkiang under Umkiang PS, East Jaintia Hills, on December 30.
Hailing from Lumphyllut village, the surrendered cadre was deployed as an area commander in East Jaintia Hills. He joined the outfit in 2010 and after training; he was actively working for the outfit. He was apprehended by Meghalaya police in 2015, but later released on bail and was absconding since then. He re-joined the outfit in Nov’ 2020 and was based at Panaipunjee under PS Kulaura of Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh, stated a press release issued by the BSF.
Welcoming Tongper to the mainstream, IG BSF Inderjit Singh Rana expressed happiness over the surrender stating that the cadre has defeated the evil forces to shun the path of violence and lead a happy life.
“I would like to congratulate the parents of Junel Tongper for bestowing their trust in BSF and helping us in our efforts to restore the happiness in their family again,” Rana said, adding that BSF is always there to help the youths who have been misled and misguided from the mainstream.
Deliberating on the move, Tongper stated, "He is one such victim who was misled and misguided by the banned outfit HNLC among other unemployed and less educated youths. Taking advantage of his simplicity, innocence and economic situation, the HNLC lured him to join the outfit, and thereafter, exploited him for their unlawful activity and malafide intention."
Notably, in case of Tongper, BSF was continuously in touch with him for the last one year. The restless and intense efforts of BSF bore the fruits and finally, Junel Tongper was motivated to join the mainstream, said Rana.
Speaking on government schemes for such surrendered cadres, Rana stated that BSF always ensures that such youths get all the facilities for skill development, vocational training, and remunerative amount as applicable post surrender.
Meanwhile, Rana also urged the local population, village heads to work hand in hand with the BSF to eradicate insurgency. IG BSF further said that BSF is continuously encouraging the youths of bordering areas to pursue their career in defence and CAPF services and lead a life of peace, tranquillity and prosperity.
