SHILLONG:

The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has written to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma complaining against illegal coke factories at East Jaintia Hills district.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, the organization claimed that there are about 25 coke factories in active operation daily in East Jaintia Hills and are running without obtaining prior permission from the concerned authority.

The organization also alleged that these factories have also bypassed the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council authorities by indicating that they have obtained clearances of the Single Window Agency of the state government.

It may be mentioned there were complaints that the factories are affecting air quality.

The organisation has demanded from the government to stop all illegalities forthwith dealing with coal mining, transportation and to ensure that such factories, if set up legally, should not affect the air quality.

“We are to caution the government that there may be 10 Ryngksan-like or Umpleng-like accidents soon if rampant illegal mining and transportation of coal is allowed to take place with total impunity to the law of the land,” they added.
