SHILLONG:

The East Jaintia National Council (Khliehriat Circle) has submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills, E Kharmalki, demanding tighter security checks at Ratacherra entry-exit point.

In the letter submitted on October 25, the EJNC alleged illegal influx of immigrants in Khiehriat during the night over the past few weeks. The people are suspected to be from Assam or Bangladesh who entered through illegal means during the late-night hours, the EJNC stated in the letter.

"Unidentified people numbering 40-50 were seen between 12 am and 1 am at Khliehriat east. Holding sufficient luggage, the people walked towards the jungle raising suspicion that these people are not from Khliehriat," the letter read.

General Secretary of EJNC-KC Mebanteilang Sukhlain asserted that the entry-exit point at Raiacherra needs to be strengthened otherwise the check gate won't serve any purpose.

Sukhlain further said that since there was no presence of police patrol during night, these illegal immigrants could not be apprehended.

He observed that unchecked influx of immigrants will change the demography of such places and will also adversely affect the employment opportunities of local people in the area.

The EJNC-KC has also requested the District Administration to forward the letter to the Superintendent of police(infiltration) Shillong Meghalaya to look into this matter for the betterment of the district.
