SHILLONG:

Intensifying its war against illegal coke factories, the Environment Coordination Committee (ECC) of Elaka Sutnga has called for a public rally against the mushrooming coke plants in the area on September 13.

General Secretary of ECC, Pynbait Sutnga, over a statement said that the decision was taken after a meeting with traditional heads of Elaka, Narwan, and women’s organisation at Lamyrsiang village in East Jaintia Hills on Saturday.

The statement also stated that the ECC will seek High Court's intervention into the matter as the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) has not paid heed to their complaints for over a month. In the rally, the ECC will deliberate on the harmful effects of coke plants on health and environment to the public.

The rally will start at 9 am from the Moopala football ground and culminate at Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office as per the permission issued by the DC, the statement said.
