SHILLONG:

Congress youth presidents of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking immediate and effective intervention to solve the inter-state boundary issues of the Northeastern states.

As per the letter dated August 2, the Congress leaders urged the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to settle and resolve the boundary disputes on a high priority basis.

"The historical and cultural sensitivities of the North Eastern communities cannot be lost sight of and must have a meaningful bearing on the settlement process," read the letter.

They observed that interim measures will no longer serve any purpose, adding that this contiguous issue is one of the major factors in dislocating peace and harmony in the region.

Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, the youth leaders felt that this contiguous issue can be exploited by the enemies of the nation/vested interest to create discord and hatred amongst communities with dangerous ramifications on the very interests of national integration.

The Congress youth presidents also pointed out that a thorough and exhaustive re-examination of the North Eastern Regions (Reorganisation) Act, 1971 is required, involving all the stakeholders in the best interest of the nation.

The signatories include -- Geli Eti (President, Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress), Mahananda Nungleppam (President, Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress), Richard Mrong Marak (President, Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress), Dr Lalmalsawma Nghaka (President, Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress), Limayangba Longkumer (President, Nagaland Pradesh Youth Congress) and Pujan Biswas (President, Tripura Youth Congress).
