SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said that all political parties have to strictly follow protocols while preparing for the upcoming bye-elections to the three Assembly seats, to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic

“I am sure the Election Commission of India (ECI) will give us protocols to be followed. So all the concerned candidates and political parties will have to follow the protocols,” Sangma said.

When asked, the Chief Minister said the government cannot presume that the third wave will happen. “The ECI must have taken all those points into consideration and accordingly announced the dates for elections,” he added.

After chairing a cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said that the decisions taken were all related to East Khasi Hills and the model code of conduct has immediately come into force.

“So we have to be careful and I want to make sure we don’t come into any kind of thing with the election code of conduct,” he said.

The bye-elections to the three seats – Mawryngkneng, Mawphlang and Rajabala – will be held on October 30.
