SHILLONG:

The Voice of Mawlai People, a conglomeration of several NGOs, will hold a 'Knife Surrender Rally' on Monday to protest against the delay of state government in suspending the top police officials involved in the Cheristerfield Thangkhiew encounter as demanded by the people.

Monday is also the last date notified by the district administration of East Khasi Hills to members of the conglomeration to reply to the show-cause notices served to them on August 31.

Speaking to The Northeast Today (TNT), a member of the Voice of Mawlai People, Donboklang Kharlyngdoh said, "The conglomeration has decided to hold a protest rally on Monday at 3 pm from Mawlai Pump to Mawlai Phudmuri. We will also decide on the response to the show-cause notice tomorrow. In the morning we will follow up on the appealed letters we had sent to the 35 MLAs of East Khais Hills and see who is willing to support our demand for justice.”

On August 31, the conglomeration had sent appeal letters to all the 35 MLAs from the Khasi Hills to support their demand for justice in the killing of former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader.

On the same day, the District administration of East Khasi Hills had served a show-cause notice to six members of the Voice of Mawlai People for breaking COVID-19 protocols during a protest rally at Mawlai Nongkwar near Thangkhiew Petrol Pump on August 25 and 26. The members were notified to respond to the show-cause notices on or before September 6, 2021.
