SHILLONG:

The demand for suspension of the police officials involved in the Cheristerfield encounter gained momentum on Monday after former MLA and president of the Mawlai Town Dorbar (MTD), SD Khongwir extended support to the protestors’ call.

"The competent authority should suspend an officer who is involved in a criminal charge,” Khongwir said, referring to an excerpt from the legal blue book.

Speaking to The Northeast Today (TNT), the traditional leader said, “Understanding the matter is important. We cannot understand why the state government cannot suspend them (police officials) as the rules are clear. The Chief Minister as the competent authority should suspend the police officers.”

Several NGOs under the banner - Voice of Mawlai People have been demanding the suspension of the top police officials allegedly involved in killing the ex-militant leader, Cherish S Thangkhiew during an encounter at Mawlai Kynton Massar on August 13.

With the people finding it difficult to eke out a living due to the pandemic and the law-and-order situation, the MTD president is hopeful of better days. “We want to maintain peace and harmony in Mawlai and, I think the public wants that too, because if the situation is peaceful, then people can go out and work,” Khongwir said.

He made an ardent appeal to the residents of Mawali to maintain peace and requested the pressure groups not to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere by resorting to violence.
