SHILLONG:

Continuing their protest against government's delay in suspending the top police officials involved in the death of ex-militant Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, Voice of Mawlai People, a conglomeration of several NGOs, organised a signature campaign and candlelight vigil at Mawlai, on Friday.

The signature campaign that kicked off at 10 am at Mawlai Stand Bus and concluded at a petrol pump in Nongkwar, was attended by a host of people including family members of the former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council leader.

"All we want is justice and peace. We were leading a peaceful life until that fateful night when they (police) took my father's life," Cherish's son, Pher Diengdoh said.

The signature campaign was followed by a candlelight vigil from Nongkwar till Phudmuri in the evening. Today’s protest came a day after demonstrators burnt the effigies of ministers, including that of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and police officials in Mawlai town.

Reacting to the demand for immediate suspension of the top cops, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on Thursday, had appealed to the protestors to wait for the judicial inquiry committee to submit its report. Sangma had reiterated that action can only be taken after the government receives the report.
