SHILLONG:

President of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) and MLA of North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, on Saturday said that he will raise the Cheristerfield encounter issue in the ongoing autumn session of the Assembly.

"I urge the government to suspend the police officials involved in the encounter before going ahead with the judicial inquiry," Nongrum said, adding that the government must adhere to the demands of the 'Voice of Mawlai people' in the matter.

"Instead of arresting the ex-militant, they (police) decided to shoot him. That is the saddest part," Nongrum said, adding that protests may intensify across the state if the government fails to look into the matter.

“I am very worried about the current situation. We don’t want peace to be disrupted in the state so the government needs to handle it very wisely,” he said.

In the upcoming days of the autumn session, several opposition party members are expected to raise the Cheristerfield encounter issue on the floor of the House to corner the government on the issue of law and order in the state.
