Bhaitbari residents in WGH seek relocation of PHC

TURA | SEPT 03, 2020:

The residents of Bhaitbari in West Garo Hills (WGH), on Thursday, submitted a memorandum to the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) for the restoration of the Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) which relocated from New Bhaitbari to Shidakandi because of the recent floods.

According to the residents of Bhaitbari, the present Community Health Centre (CHC) building in Shidakandi, is far and would require them to travel a significant distance.

We may note that the floods led to the relocation of almost all essential services including emergency services, antenatal care (ANC), postnatal care (PNC) and doctor's quarters from New Bhaitbari.

Residents of villages falling under New Bhaitbari PHC stated that they had hoped that once the floods subsided, things would go back to normal.
"However, the earlier PHC is now lying in a state of neglect," they said.

"The doctors and staff quarters have not yet been set up and they are currently living in rented accommodation in the village of Shidakandi."
"Their quarters in the old PHC are lying vacant as there is no one there," they said.

Residents also stated that they fear the PHC will "become a ghost structure and could turn into a gambling den if neglected."
