As a government employee, DGP is entitled to go on leave: CM Sangma

"People have the right to question in many ways; I have nothing to say on this... the leave request can be on health or personal grounds, and as a government employee, he is entitled to it,” said Sangma, adding “there is no confusion surrounding the matter”.

SHILLONG:

Hinting that leave may soon be granted to state Director-General of Police (DGP) R Chandranathan, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday said that “as a government employee, he is entitled to it”.

"People have the right to question in many ways; I have nothing to say on this... the leave request can be on health or personal grounds, and as a government employee, he is entitled to it,” said Sangma, adding “there is no confusion surrounding the matter”.

Recently, reports of DGP Chandranathan applying for leave amidst an ongoing judicial inquiry in the Cheristerfield encounter case had raised many eyebrows. Various pressure groups, which have been demanding suspension of the top cops involved in the killing of the ex-militant, had questioned the timing of the DGP’s leave application.

Speaking on the status of the judicial inquiry, Sangma confirmed that the probe has already begun. "The inquiry has begun and the Chief Secretary has already met the Judge heading the judicial inquiry committee. I have not had a review meeting but it will take some time," Sangma said.

He added that any decision on the suspension of the police officials will be taken “when the inquiry report is submitted".

Sangma maintained that the law and order situation in the state is under control and the government is doing everything to ensure peace prevails.
