Union HM Amit Shah inaugurates ISBT, COVID Step-down hospital in Shillong

Shah first visited the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) in Umiam to lay the foundation stone of the NESAC multipurpose Conference Centre  & Exhibition facility.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated several infrastructural projects in Shillong during his two-day visit to Meghalaya on July 24 and 25. 

Shah landed at Umroi airport on Saturday morning and was welcomed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh and other government officials. 

Shah first visited the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) in Umiam to lay the foundation stone of the NESAC multipurpose Conference Centre  & Exhibition facility.

The gathering at NESAC was also attended by Union DONER Minister Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh, Chairman of ISRO Dr K Sivan and chief ministers of all the northeastern states. 

From there, Shah headed to Mawlai Mawiong in Shillong to inaugurate the Interstate Bus Terminus (ISBT).

Addressing the gathering, Shah said the ISBT will connect Meghalaya to all the Northeastern states, enhancing road connectivity in the region besides boosting the economy of NE. 

"Shillong has always remained an important region in the North East and has come a long way since it became the capital of Meghalaya," Shah said, adding that it was important to connect Shillong with other states of the North East for the development of the entire region.

"Growth and development can only be achieved if the capital cities are connected with roadways, railways and airways, and the BJP will focus on bringing all three areas of connectivity in the region," he added.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the IBST is very important for the state and North East region as a whole. "Going forward we will focus on air connectivity for the development of Meghalaya," he said. 

The Union Home Minister also flagged off some buses from the ISBT before heading to Umsawli to inaugurate the Cryogenic Oxygen Plant and Pediatric Ward.

He will later hold meetings with the chief ministers of the 8 northeastern states and Meghalaya-based NGOs at the State Convention Centre, Shillong.
