SHILLONG:

With the announcement of total lockdown in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya due to the surge in Covid cases, market areas in Shillong city were packed with people purchasing stock that will suffice for the 10-day lockdown.

The total lockdown in the district will be effective from 8 pm of Wednesday till 5 am of May 31.

The scene at the Jhalupara market and other commercial areas today was chaotic. There was no trace of even "partial lockdown" in the area and people were seen moving around like normal days.

Meanwhile, amid this COVID-19 and lockdown gloom, Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable trust was seen distributing food items to the poor and needy.

Earlier, this week, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District had ordered the closure of the Laitumkhrah market, after the Incident Commander ZONE-I had reported that the public was not following the protocols for the opening of shops as laid by the government.
