SHILLONG:

“Illegal settlers” may come under the purview of the Meghalaya Public Premises (Eviction or Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1980 as the Government of Meghalaya is all set to implement it once the existing settlers of Sweepers’ Colony from Them Iew Mawlong area of Shillong are relocated.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong while speaking to the press on November 23, said that the Eviction Act will be enforced once all the employees of Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and other departments of the state government are shifted from Them Iew Mawlong.

Clarifying that the major aim of the state government in the current scenario is to provide permanent quarters to all the genuine employees of the SMB, the minister said that the implementation of the said act shall follow suit.

The latest development stemmed from the taking over of the total land at Them Iew Mawlong, measuring about 12,444.13 sqm as per lease deed dated March 31, 2021, by the state government after paying Rs 2 crore premium, on October 29, to the Syiem of Hima Mylliem in its bid to relocate the Sweeper’s Colony.

The tripartite lease deed was signed between the state government, the Syiem of Mylliem and SMB after the state Cabinet accepted the report and recommendations of the High-Level Committee (HLC) headed by the Deputy CM.

The Deputy CM further informed that the forty employees who have already shifted from Them Iew Mawlong are from different state government departments and all concerned departments have been requested to provide quarters to their employees in their respective places out of Sweepers’ Colony.

Meanwhile, on the utilization of the land at Them Iew Mawlong once the settlers are relocated, Tynsong said that instruction has been given to the Urban Affairs department to work out the proposal. In this regard, the minister made it clear that he cannot really say “whether a shopping mall or parking lot may come up in the area” since the urban affairs department has been entrusted to come back to the cabinet with a proposal.
