‘Come out in the open’ KSU tells writers of letter who accused top cops in Cherish S. Thangkhiew case

The letter condemned the killing of Cherish S. Thangkhiew on August 13 and pointed fingers at the top police officials — namely IPS officers Jagpal Singh Dhanoa and Shailendra Bamaniya, DGP R. Chandranathan and IGP (Law & Order) Mukesh Kumar Singh — saying “even ministers are afraid to speak against these IPS officers.”

SHILLONG:
The Khasi Students Union (KSU) on Monday urged the writers of a letter, who claimed to be retired policemen, to come out in the open and “tell everybody the truth” after the letter alleged involvement of top police officials of the state in the Cherish S. Thangkhiew encounter case.

The letter was sent via post on September 23 to Granary Starfield Thangkhiew, the brother of ex-Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader, and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case if the state government failed to suspend police officials involved.

Speaking to The Northeast Today (TNT) Granary said, “I have the letter here with me. I don't have anything to say. I have shown it to my lawyers and they are studying it."

“For the good of everyone, they need to come out in the open and not just write a letter. Only then, it will help the cause. After all, anyone can write a letter like this,” said KSU President Lambokstar Marngar, adding that they are yet to verify the authenticity of the letter.

“The letter was posted to our office, but we don't know who wrote it or whether the authors are genuine people or not. But if it's authentic, we will meet them to understand their stand better,” he said.

“If you want justice, these four IPS officers should be temporarily removed from their service. If the government doesn't do so, a CBI enquiry should be demanded on the case filed by the children of bah Che (sic),” the authors, under the so-called umbrella of Sur Ki Pulit Ba Lah Shongthait (Voice of Retired Police), said in the letter.

TNT approached the police department to verify the names mentioned in the letter. However, the police department refrained from issuing any official statement on the matter. But sources in the department have informed that the names and signatures mentioned in the letter are fake.

Earlier this month, a one-man judicial inquiry commission, headed by chairman of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission T. Vaiphei, had issued a public notice asking people to submit their statements in connection with the case on or before September 25.
