Two Manipur players among 16-member hockey squad for Tokyo Olympics

Various other athletes belonging to Northeast India have also been selected to represent India in their respective sports in the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

IMPHAL: 

Two hockey players, hailing from the Northeastern state of Manipur, have been shortlisted in the Men's and Women's Indian Hockey teams who will represent the country in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, respectively. 

While Nilakanta Sharma, a midfielder from Imphal East district in Manipur, will be representing the team in the men's squad, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, a veteran midfielder, will represent the country in the women's squad. 

Hockey India selected a 16-member Indian women's hockey squad for the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, June 17. However, the men's hockey squad for the Tokyo Olympics was revealed on Friday, June 18. 

The chief minister of Manipur, Shri N.Biren Singh, took to his official Twitter handle to congratulate the athletes. 

"Congratulations, Sushila Chanu and Nilakanta Sharma, on making it to India’s Women and Men Hockey squad, respectively for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games. I’m proud that many young athletes from Manipur will be representing our country in the #Tokyo2020. Best wishes to the teams!" he tweeted. 

Various other athletes belonging to Northeast India have also been selected to represent India in their respective sports in the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.
