IMPHAL:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the National People’s Party (NPP) will contest most of the seats in the Manipur Assembly polls to be held in 2022.

Sangma, who was in Imphal on Saturday to discuss poll-related matters with party leaders and workers, stated that thirty individuals from different constituencies have come forward to contest the election as NPP candidates. However, the party is yet to decide on the final number, he said.

Sangma informed that, during the meeting, a slew of issues involving the party’s preparedness for the upcoming polls were discussed with the leaders including the pre-poll strategy and the role of the newly-formed youth wing, among others.

"NPP has formed a new youth wing and many leaders from different constituencies have already joined it. We are expecting more will join the party in the days to come,” said Sangma.

The Chief Minister also reiterated that the Manipur Assembly election is crucial for the NPP to emerge as a strong political force in the state as well as the Northeast.

Clarifying the party’s stand on pre-poll alliance, the NPP chief said that it will not form pre-poll alliance with any party in the Manipur Election. And that includes the ruling coalition partner the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said Sangma.

NPP is one of the major partners in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government in Manipur with four legislators.
