Manipur reports first case of Omicron

According to the release, the 48-year old person had tested positive for Covid-19 on the eighth day of his arrival in India, and subsequently, the sample from the said person was sent for Whole Genome Sequencing to the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Takyelpat.

Manipur reported its first case of Omicron variant of Coronavirus in an international passenger coming from Tanzania on December 27, a press release from the directorate of health services informed.

According to the release, the 48-year old person had tested positive for Covid-19 on the eighth day of his arrival in India, and subsequently, the sample from the said person was sent for Whole Genome Sequencing to the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Takyelpat.

The person is currently undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal, the release further said.

Keeping in mind the emergence of the first case in the state, and the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, the Manipur government has directed all citizens to adhere to Covid appropriate behaviour, and mandatorily wear a mask at all times, given that masks have proven to be effective against all variants of Covid-19.
