Manipur journalist, activist arrested over Facebook posts

A case was registered against them allegedly over Facebook posts relating to the death of Manipur BJP president Prof Saikhom Tikendra Singh.

Manipur-based journalist Kishorechandra Wangkhem and activist Erendro Leichombam have been arrested and, a case was registered against them allegedly over Facebook posts relating to the death of Manipur BJP president Prof Saikhom Tikendra Singh on Thursday evening.

An FIR was filed against the duo by BJP general secretary P Premananda Meetei and BJP vice-president Usham Deban. It was informed that the duo will remain in police custody till May 17. 

In his Facebook post, Wangkhem wrote: “Santhi Sanyung na yadrabo, oh!!! RIP #Rashikang_Kangyet Hayeng nga chaani.” (Have not cow dung and cow urine worked for you, oh? RIP charmless who argues without any valid reason. I am going to eat fish tomorrow.)

Activist Erendro also took to Facebook and wrote, "The cure for Corona is not cow dung & cow urine. The cure is science & common sense. Professor ji RIP.”

Manipur BJP president Prof Saikhom Tikendra Singh died due to COVID-19 on Thursday at Shija Hospital in Imphal. 

The duo has been arrested on several occasions for posting controversial posts on social media. 

In 2020, the Imphal-based journalist, Kishorechandra Wangkhem, was arrested for posting a derogatory remark against the Maram tribe on Facebook. He was also arrested back in 2018 under the National Security Act for lambasting the Chief Minister of Manipur.

Similarly, the activist and convener of the Peoples' Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) party, Erendro Leichombam, was arrested in 2018 and charged under section (I53-A/153-B/505/506/511 IPC and 84-C IT Act) for promoting enmity between different groups and criminal intimidation.
