Manipur Govt delays ADC elections amid COVID-19 surge

It may be mentioned that on April 7, 2021, the government of Manipur and the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) had agreed that the state government will announce the election of ADC on or before may 5, 2021 so that the ADC election could be completed by June 25, 2021.

The Government of Manipur on Monday informed that the Autonomous District Council (ADC) election notification which was supposed to be announced on or before May 5, 2021, has been delayed due to the surge of COVID-19 cases across the state, which has put restrictions on the functioning of government offices and other establishments.

In this regard, the Additional Chief Secretary (TA&H), Letkhogin Haokip has issued a release stating, "Due to the containment measures put in place given the COVID situation, the government has declared government offices as containment zones and therefore the government has not been able to notify the ADC election as agreed upon."

It may be mentioned that on April 7, 2021, the government of Manipur and the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) had agreed that the state government will announce the election of ADC on or before may 5, 2021 so that the ADC election could be completed by June 25, 2021.

The release further stated that the government is initiating necessary procedures for holding the election as early as possible.
