IMPHAL:

The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has pleaded before the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to enable the MPCC to be a party in the drug-related probe, alongside the State Home Department and the Director-General of Police (DGP).

The petitioner, N.Jayentakumar Singh, who is the chairman of the MPCC State Legal Department, had filed an application with the MHRC to 'implead him as a party respondent' in the suo moto case in matters arising out of the drug crimes in Manipur.

The suo moto case filed by the MHRC states that the menace of drugs may have devastating Human Rights violation consequences and undermines the right to health and privacy as a matter of collective human right of the citizens of this country in general and the citizens in Manipur in particular.

The MPCC said that it is very much desirous to take part in the proceeding which, given a chance, may ensure legal assistance "in the determination of the matter which is of social concern."
