Student bodies, local clubs and civil society organisations under the banner ‘Justice for Sanaton’ called for a 24-hour bandh in Manipur on Monday, disrupting normal life in the northeastern state.

Sanaton Athokpam was a 22-year-old fifth-semester MBBS student at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

He was found hanging with both hands tied behind his back inside his hostel room on March 15, 2021.

NGOs are demanding the immediate suspension of the ‘irresponsible’ director of RIMS and the Dean (Academics).

They have also urged the authorities to expedite the slow-paced magisterial inquiry and threatened further agitations unless the case is resolved.
