IMPHAL:

Manipur's Sericulture Minister Awangbow Newmai inaugurated the five-day long ‘Cocoon Buyers and Sellers Meet Cum Exhibition 2021’ at Project Management Complex in Sangaipat, Imphal East, on Friday.

Newmai also launched a website of the department (www.serimanipur.nic.in) and handed over two-wheelers to selected 35 agents to be utilised during a door-to-door visit to the sericulture farmers and beneficiaries.

Speaking on the occasion, Newmai expressed happiness over reports of an increase in cocoons production this year.

"The credit goes to the people involved in sericulture production for all their hard work despite the lack of labour force during the COVID pandemic," he said.

Stating that he had firsthand knowledge of the various issues of the farmers and beneficiaries during his field visit to the Sericulture farms across the state, Newmai assured maximum support to the farmers.

The idea of the government and the department is to support people, to make them self reliant and to increase the raw silk production and products, he said.

Appealing to the farmers and beneficiaries to spread awareness regarding sericulture farming, he said that they need not worry or get discouraged during the pandemic as the demand for silk is increasing day by day in the state and the country.

The meet-cum-exhibition gives farmers a platform to sell their products at better prices, he added.
