DIBRUGARH:

Activists belonging to the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Wednesday burnt the effigy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in protest against the "failure" of the Home Ministry to prevent the recent Assam-Mizoram border clash in which 6 Assam policemen were killed and several others including a police superintendent were injured.

The union home minister's effigy was burnt in the heart of Tinsukia town by the AJYCP protesters

The protesters led by Tinsukia district AJYCP general secretary Kanchan Bora alleged that the recent clash at the Assam-Mizoram border in Assam's Cachar district was due to the failure of the Home Ministry and the central intelligence agencies.

Bora questioned how the clash happened barely 48 hours after Shah’s visit to the North East.

"On July 24, the Home Minister visited Shillong and declared that the Narendra Modi government was keen to resolve all border disputes between north-eastern states. Barely 48 hours later, the Assam-Mizoram border witnessed massive violence that claimed the lives of six Assam policemen," said AJYCP Tinsukia district general secretary Kanchan Bora said.

He said, "It was total failure on the part of the Home Ministry that failed to gauge the ground situation. It is highly condemnable that Mizoram police opened fire at the Assam police personnel who were only peacefully protecting their own land. Now the union home minister should urge the Mizoram government to book the culprits."

In Dibrugarh, AJYCP activists led by the organisation's Dibrugarh district general secretary Priyabrat Gohain burnt the effigy of the Union Home Minister.

"The Assam government has failed to protect the border areas. We condemn such incident, and warn Assam government to take strict action against miscreants from Mizoram who are responsible for the killing seven  Assam police personnel," said Gohain.
