TNT-The Northeast Today is decoding one candidate who joined the fray at one point in time as a young maverick, Gaurav Gogoi, son of former senior Congress leader and three-time Assam Chief Minister Late Tarun Gogoi and Dolly Gogoi.

Who is Gaurav Gogoi?

Born in 1982 in New Delhi, Gaurav Gogoi graduated from St. Columba’s School in Delhi.

# Completed his Bachelor of Technology (Electrical Engineering) in 2004 from Indraprastha University, Delhi.

# Holds a Master in Public Administration from Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University.

# Worked for the marketing division of Airtel and later joined a Delhi-based NGO called Pravah in 2005.

In 2013, Gaurav Gogoi married UK-born Elizabeth Colebourn, who is working as a Senior Consultant for Oxford Policy Management (OPM) India Pvt Ltd.

POLITICAL MILESTONES

# In March 2014, the Congress party announced Gogoi as its candidate from Kaliabor (Lok Sabha constituency) and filed his nomination on March 19, 2014.

# Gaurav Gogoi was elected to 16th Lok Sabha from Kaliabor constituency, beating his nearest rival Mrinal Kumar Saikia of BJP by 349,441 votes.

# On March 28, 2017 Gogoi became a Member of Standing Committee on Defence.

# In 2019 National Congress President Sonia Gandhi appointed Gaurav Gogoi as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of two Northeastern states, namely Tripura and Manipur, relieving Luizinho Faleiro of the post.

CONTROVERSY

In 2017, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan suspended Gaurav Gogoi, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury along with four other Congress members because of their unruly conduct.
