GUWAHATI:

Schools, colleges, and universities reopened in Assam after months on Monday, bringing smiles on to the faces of students who have been eagerly waiting to attend classes physically.

While classes for students of higher-secondary and post-graduation levels began on Monday, the decision to open other classes will be taken by the government later on.

Giving details about the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Education Department before the reopening of the institutions, Assam Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu said, "To ensure the safety of all students, institutes have been sanitised, and seating capacity for the moment has been kept at 30."

The students were seen wearing masks and using sanitisers before entering the school premises and also during classes. They were also subjected to temperature checks on the entrance gates as per the SOPs issued by the government. The students have also been restricted from sharing any items such as textbooks, pens, lunch boxes, water bottles with fellow students during their stay in the school.

Despite all these restrictions, a lot of excitement was seen among the students, as they entered the school premises clad in uniforms after the long gap, "It feels great to be physically present in school after attending online classes all this while. Finally, we got to meet our friends and teachers," said a student while speaking to The Northeast Today (TNT).

Expressing happiness that the classes have resumed, another student said that she will any day opt for offline classes over online classes as interactions between teachers and students is better in the former. “With the teacher physically present in the class, I can concentrate more on my lessons,” said another student.

However, all the educational institutes didn’t open their gates for students on Monday. While some cited sanitisation of campuses as the reason, others said that they don’t want to get into trouble by hurrying into resumption of offline classes. More educational institutes in the state, however, are expected to open in the coming weeks.
