GUWAHATI:

A two-day ‘camp sitting and public open hearing’ organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to hear complaints regarding human rights violations from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim and Nagaland, began at the Assam Administrative Staff College here on December 16.

Chairperson of the NHRC, Arun Mishra, inaugurated the camp in presence of NHRC members Justice MM Kumar and Rajiv Jain, secretary-general Bimbadhar Pradhan, and other senior officials of the Commission and state government.

A total of 31 cases pertaining to the five northeastern states will be taken up in one sitting. These include fresh complaints received in response to the Commission's public notices for open hearings as well as cases that were earlier registered but for which the required reports from the concerned state authorities have not been received by the Commission.

As of December 17, nine cases already in progress before the Full Commission will be taken up for consideration.

The cases will be heard in the presence of complainants and public authorities to permit some decisions to be taken on the spot to address grievances of the victims of rights violations.

Additionally, the Commission will meet with NGOs and human rights defenders to assess the human rights situation and related issues in these five states. Following this, the Commission will meet with senior officers of the five states to discuss important human rights issues.

Later, the Commission will brief the media about the outcome of the camp.
