Assam: 300 shops gutted in fire at Tezpur Chowk Bazar

“About 300 shops were gutted in the fire. We believe the fire was caused by a short circuit. Further investigation is on,” police sources said.

GUWAHATI:

A major fire engulfed a cluster of at least 300 shops of Tezpur Chowk Bazar, the main market of Tezpur town in Sonitpur district at around 12.30 am on Sunday.

Sources said the fire spread fast and gutted a number of garments shops as well in the Borghula Chariali area of the town.

“About 300 shops were gutted in the fire. We believe the fire was caused by a short circuit. Further investigation is on,” police sources said.

Sources said that several fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse the flames even as it spread fast as the shops were bunched together.

The cost of damage caused by the inferno was yet to be ascertained.
