GUWAHATI:

In a bid to improve the standard of education of government schools, the Assam government is planning to merge schools where pupil count is less, thereby closing 3000 schools that lack the necessary infrastructure.

"We are trying to merge government schools where the number of students is less, including schools lying within a close proximity," said Ranoj Pegu, Assam Education Minister, on Thursday.

The government's move to amalgamate schools is aimed towards managing the teacher-pupil ratio, effective school management, saving administrative costs, and improving the overall functioning of government schools in Assam, he added.

In its effort, the education department informed that the schools situated in the same campus or in any nearby area shall be amalgamated/merged into one. All such schools will be brought into one single administrative and academic unit to improve their functioning.
