Gauhati High Court directs Assam authorities to provide ration to sex-workers
Gauhati High Court issued an order to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar district and the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority on May 28, to provide ration for sex workers keeping in view the ongoing COVID crisis.
Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak cited a September 2020 Supreme Court observation that sex workers have a right to live with dignity, after hearing a petition filed by Debajit Gupta, a Silchar resident.
Since a project is being run by the National AIDS Control Organisation, sex workers and their families have already been identified by the court, the DC informed the court.
There are about 70 sex workers in Silchar who have about 300 people as dependents on them.
