GUWAHATI:

At a time when the entire world is fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, Assam Transport and Industries Minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary kicked up a row on Thursday with his bizarre remarks on the Covid-19 virus in a government programme.

“A list of people who will die of Covid-19 has already been prepared in God’s super-computer,” said Patowary at an event to distribute financial assistance to beneficiaries under a state government scheme for widows of COVID-19 victims at the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

Patowary also criticised the World Health Organisation (WHO) for its alleged “failure” to invent medicine to treat the “small virus” despite spending billions of dollars on research. He later downplayed the statement, saying he did not want to raise a controversial issue.

The bizarre comment, however, drew flak from netizens. One user in a popular micro-blogging website who goes by the name @Peee_Hub, said, “Assam Minister should try for standup comedy (sic).” Another user, who goes by the name @sabirfootloose, termed him “Assam govt’s malware (sic).”
