The Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell on Friday arrested ten persons in connection with the cash-for-job scam in the 2019 recruitment exam of the Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APDCL).

The suspects were arrested from their residences in Guwahati and the outskirts of the city, and their houses were thoroughly searched, the police said.

The suspects have been identified as Dipankar Dehingia (Officer on Special Duty, APDCL, Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited and Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd), Sasanka Saikia, Kankan Sarma,  Kaushik Das, Biswajit Barman, Dulumoni Deka, Jayanta Deka, Farha Alom, Babilon Kakati, and Tridip Sarma.

Rosy Kalita, Superintendent, CM Vigilance Cell, added that the prime accused Mohammad Ataur Rahman was not found at his home, and the investigation is ongoing. Kalita added that the accused were produced before Courts of Judicial Magistrate on Saturday.

The investigation reportedly started following directions from the Chief Minister's Office, especially after the Assam police sub-inspector recruitment scam was revealed last year.

In 2020, as many as 45 persons were arrested by Assam police in connection with the leaking of the Sub-Inspector Unarmed Branch recruitment examination for 597 posts. An expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Diban Deka and ex-Deputy Inspector General of Police, Prasanta Kumar Dutta were arrested in relation to the case, and 5 crores were recovered in raids thereof.
