BJP leader stabbed to death in Tinsukia

DIBRUGARH:

A 48-year-old local BJP leader on Friday was stabbed to death by his alleged political rivals at Bordumsa in the Upper Assam Tinsukia district ahead of Assam Assembly polls.

The deceased was identified as Devananda Gogoi, president of BJP's Dumduma-Nagaon booth committee.

According to sources, he was stabbed by a local youth while he was working in the backyard of his home.

"A heated argument took place between Devananda Gogoi and Jaichandra Gogoi of AJP. We don't know what happened after that. We condemned the incident and demand stringent punishment for the culprit," said a local villager.

His body was sent for postmortem at Tinsukia civil hospital.

The incident has sparked tension in the entire Margherita Legislative Assembly constituency.

"It is not clear whether it was a political murder or not. We are investigating the matter. We have picked up Jaichandra Gogoi in connection with the murder," said a police officer.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the incident and asked police to investigate the matter.

However, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader denied the allegation.
