DIBRUGARH:

The Dibrugarh district administration has declared the Zaloni tea estate as a containment zone and shut the garden, after 90 workers and staff members tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Following the containment, the Circle Officer of Tengakhat, Medical Inspector of Plantations and officials from the Health Department were sent to the garden to take stock of the situation.

The garden hospital and the two vacant staff quarters have been turned into temporary isolation centres for the positive patients.

District Surveillance Officer of IDSP, Dr Nabajyoti Gogoi said that vaccination drive would be carried out in the garden apart from other measures like sanitization etc.

It may be mentioned that the tea-based organizations have been demanding vaccination for the workers as the community is close-knit and reside in close proximity.

"We had urged the government for vaccination drive at the tea estate but the government failed to conduct the vaccination programme in the tea belt area. The second wave of COVID-19 is more dangerous than the earlier one. We appeal to the government to start vaccination drive at tea garden area as soon as possible to contain the rising number cases of COVID," said a leader of ATTSA.
