GUWAHATI:

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu arrived in Guwahati on Sunday morning as part of his "knowledge pilgrimage" tour to the Northeastern states.

Naidu inaugurated several projects, including a PET-MRI wing, at the State Cancer Institute of the Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration, the president said that the facility will not only improve diagnostic accuracy but also reduce patients’ exposure to radiation. "It is only the fourth such machine in India and the first in the country, which is based on Time-of-Flight technology," he said.

Referring to the step-down cancer care model, called the Distributed Cancer Care Model, which the Assam government proposes to implement in partnership with Tata Trusts, he advised other states to emulate it for providing timely and effective treatment to cancer patients.

Naidu also inaugurated the Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre at Panbazar in Guwahati. The heritage-cum-cultural centre will house antique articles showcasing the rich heritage of Assam.

He lauded the Assam government and the state’s medical fraternity for the services they rendered during the COVID-19 pandemic, and called for making healthcare more accessible and affordable to the common man.

Stressing on having a robust healthcare sector, Naidu reiterated that there is a need to have at least one medical college in each district of the country.
