GUWAHATI:

In the cause of reducing human-elephant conflicts, around 700 farmers hailing from the Ronghang and Hatikhali area in Nagaon have donated 33 acres of community land to generate food for the wild elephants.

The starving wild elephants often find their ways down the hills of the adjoining Karbi Anglong district every year. In the course of time, the paddy fields of the area get damaged and, hence, lead to numerous deaths of people and the animal.

"We are producing and cultivating food for elephants for the third consecutive year. We have planted saplings for various fruits, trees in around 400 bighas of land in the hill areas along the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border. Apart from it, we have cultivated Napier grass for elephants," environmentalist Binod Dulu Bora informed.

According to the Assam State Forest Department, nearly 359 people have lost their lives resulting from human-elephant conflicts in the state between 2016 and 2019.
