Assam: Silchar teacher booked for “objectionable” post on Modi

GUWAHATI

An FIR has been lodged against a college teacher in Silchar for an “objectionable” social media post related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala.

According to the complaint lodged with Silchar Sadar police station by Snehangshu Bhattacharjee, the president of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Gurucharan College unit on January 16, Tamojit Saha, a teacher at Ramanuj Gupta Junior College, has been “spreading disrespect and hate” against the Prime Minister and the Haryana politicians on social media.

The complainant alleged that Tamojit posted a photo on Facebook with a caption in Bengali – “Impact of farmers’ movement in Haryana,” and that the post contained the images of the Prime Minister and the Haryana leaders with a garland of shoes around them.

He further demanded strict action against the teacher.

A case (number 167/2021) under Sections 294 (obscene acts, songs) and 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 was registered and a probe has been initiated.

 A resident of Public School Road in Silchar, Tamojit, however, is yet to be arrested.
