Assam polls 2021: PM accuses Cong of making ‘false promises’; mocks ‘five guarantees’

GUWAHATI:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the Opposition Congress of “making false promises and getting desperate to come to power.”

Addressing an attended election rally at Kamargaon in Upper Assam’s Bokakhat, Modi mocked the Opposition party’s “Five Guarantees,” alleging that the grand old party “can only guarantee false promises, create confusion and divide economically disadvantaged sections for the sake of attaining power. This has been their formula.”

“Congress does not have any vision, commitment or intention to do something. Congress wants to have the kursi (seat of power) at any cost,” Modi said, while addressing people at the constituency where the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has fielded Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president and sitting MLA, Atul Bora as its candidate.

The Prime Minister referred to the “double-engine” Congress (UPA) government, saying that all that it gave Assam was “double neglect, double corruption and double influx”.

“The Congress exchequer seems to be empty, for which it now wants to come to power… but that loot engine needs to be kept away,” he said.

The Prime Minister further pulled up Congress for making friends with parties “formed based on communal politics” in Assam, Bengal and Kerala.

Pointing out at the increasing incidents of rhino poaching during Congress rule in Assam, Modi said that NDA has taken poachers to task, protected rhinos and freed Kaziranga National Park and its surrounding areas from immigrants.

Highlighting the BJP-led government’s achievements in Assam, he said, “We have given impetus to Assam’s growth in the past five years. This will be a vote for further pushing the growth momentum ahead, being self-reliant, rapid industrialisation and employment generation.”

Unlike the Congress double engine government of the past, the NDA double-engine government has not only brought peace and stability, it has ensured basic needs such as toilets, LPG connections, power, free medicine to the economically disadvantaged sections.

“Our next target is to provide water supply to every home and houses to every family in the state,” he said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the investment made in Assam’s petroleum sector in the past five-six years and the emphasis on bamboo products of the state and creation of a market worldwide.

“The NDA government has understood the problems faced by the farmers, traders and the industry and amended a law to promote bamboo plantation and build a value chain. We have come out with a special policy for promoting bamboo and cane as well,” he said.

Modi also conveyed his Rongali Bihu greetings to the thousands who had gathered at Mohura field, the venue of the poll rally, saying “That so many people have braved the heat to be attend the rally is a testimony to the BJP coming to power again.”
